“The multimodal combination of words and visuals is acknowledged but under examined in news framing literature.”

The usage of multiple forms of literacy is key to student understanding; however, some forms of literature are more reliable than other forms of literature. The usage of modern technology can form distractions for the viewer of online material. The article written by Powell, Boomgaarden, De Swert, and de Vreese provided evidence that viewers of online videos did not obtain a deep understanding of the material. The article proposed that the viewer can become distracted by the visuals and other components of the video and miss important information. Complex topics need the audience to interact with the material for the entire piece of literature. Many videos compact information into a shorter format and simplify certain subjects which forces the audience to focus on every topic covered. The audience can be distracted by on screen visuals and lose tract of the storying being told. Video can allow struggling students to learn the material, but they can easily miss certain subjects when watching a video. Teachers must discover a balance of videos and articles for each of their classes. What is your opinion of video material within the classroom?

“In order to be read, a poem, an equation, a painting, a dance, a novel, or a contract each requires a distinctive form of literacy, when literacy means, as I intend it to mean, a way of conveying meaning…”

The usage of multimodal literacies is key to the engagement of each individual class and each individual student. Teachers need to adapt their classroom to fit the needs of each class. Each class will learn using certain material such as videos, internet sources, print sources, and books. Teachers must understand that students will use these resources differently to support an idea on a provided subject. Some students will use more videos while others will analyze more print sources. The student needs to use their resources effectively, and teachers need to provide their students with the skills to properly interpret each form of material. Students must be able to understand the process of decoding each source that they use and see the major components of each source. In the modern education system, teachers need to understand the interests of their students and allow them to explore their interests within assignments. The subject of their research needs to focus around topics covered within the classroom; however, students can be allowed to select a topic which peaks their interests. The usage of online resources such as blogs can allow students to discuss their ideas within a friendly environment. Non-linear reading is a mandatory skill for students to use throughout their lives. This type of reading focuses on moving from one section to another without fully reading each section. The reader focuses on understanding the major components of each section instead of reading each line to collect their information. Students need to understand the process of reading before they begin their research process, so they can organize their time and use it effectively. Many students get lost in their search for information and choose a section at random instead of reading introduction sentences and analyzing the key terms of each section. Students must understand the reading process, and teachers must understand that each student has their own individual reading style. What are your ideas on the topic of student reading systems?
